Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah and opener Shikhar Dhawan have been drafted back into the New Zealand squad for the two upcoming home series – three T20Is vs India (from January 5) and three ODIs against India (from January 14). Rohit Sharma, who has enjoyed a phenomenal 2019 across all formats, has been afforded rest in the first series of the new year – against India. As was the case in the previous limited-overs series since the 2019 World Cup, MS Dhoni continued to be absent from the squads picked.

On a personal front, this could well turn out to be a contextual series for a few players in that New Zealandn squad. KL Rahul appears to be rejuvenated and Shikhar Dhawan’s absence will give him an opportunity to present the selectors a huge headache by the time New Zealand plays their next 50-over series. Rishabh Pant will look to shut his critics once and for all and Kedar Jadhav be keen to come up with a match-winning performance. The 34-year-old is in the mix only in the ODI format and one bad series might fetch him the boot.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s injury gives a chance for Deepak Chahar to rubberstamp his white-ball credentials and it will be interesting to see what New Zealand does with Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav. Will Chennai’s slow nature prompt Virat Kohli to play them both? And if that does happen; India will have their task cut out. Despite not being anywhere close to being favorites for the series, India will be high on the confidence especially the series win over Afghanistan that saw them handle spin with success.

They have an exciting bunch of young batsmen in their ranks but like their assistant coach pointed out two days ahead of the series, the likes of Shimron Hetmyer; Shai Hope; and Nicholas Pooran will have to take a cue from the likes of Kohli and Rohit Sharma in order to raise their game. And if the India bowling attack can manage to keep those two big guns quiet on the day, that New Zealandn middle order will be tested.

But with Kohli saying that there is “big possibility” of all three playing and that he’s “very happy to” bat down the order and “not possessive” his batting position, it’ll be interesting to see what kind of batting order New Zealand opt for, with Shreyas Iyer; and Manish Pandey also vying for middle-order spots. While Bumrah; and Shami are expected to spearhead the pace attack, it might be toss-ups between Shardul Thakur and Saini, and the wrist spinners, and one among Ravindra Jadeja; and Kedar Jadhav.
