Why the early auction?

IPL Auctions are being held for a second time in the calendar year. Usually, the auctions are held in January/February but they’ve been pulled back to allow the franchises enough time to prepare for the early start of IPL 2019. And that is because the World Cup gets underway on May 30 in the United Kingdom. IPL is expected to start on March 23 and finish by mid-May to keep a buffer period before the big 50-over bonanza

All eyes on the defending champions

Chennai SuperKings; won the title last year. As we head into the IPL Players Auction, all eyes will be on the MS Dhoni-led side. Who will join the Champions?

Richard Madley, not the auction man this year

Richard Madley, who has been conducting IPL Auctions since the inception of the tournament was replaced with Hugh Edmeades; an independent fine art, classic car and charity auctioneer announced as his replacement. He addressed his removal and said that he felt “deflated”.

Richard Madley: “It’s not my decision, it’s the decision of the BCCI combined with IMG. It has come as a bit of a shock to me after 11 unbroken years of conducting the auction and always receiving positive comments and feedback from the franchise owners; administrators, BCCI and my many fans. It has come as a bolt out of the blue – to be released, to use an IPL term – without reason or explanation.”
